“Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it” – light up the darkness.

I’m currently reading La Magia or The Magic by Rhonda Byrne and I came across the quote above. This book is about the power of gratitude, but the quote spoke to a different aspect in me. It spoke to my dark side.

I don’t know how many of you suffer from a dark side, but I can tell you that I fight internal battles almost daily. I fight to quiet the demons of negativity. The demons who tell me that I’m not good enough or that my efforts to rise above what statistics say my life should look like are in vain.

You ever feel like you’re digging a hole just to fill it up?

Well let me tell you about my bouts of darkness despite my positivity. My bouts of darkness despite my knowledge of the law of attraction. I could literally read a gazillion uplifting quotes and memes in a day (and I do! I mean, Lord, if I could just put my phone down for one second!!! The thing might as well be fixed on to my hand!) and still feel some sort of impending doom. The grayest of gray clouds following me everywhere I go.

If this is you, you’re not alone!

We can blame society, genetics, insecurities, whatever it is we want to use to justify this action or reaction within us… I honestly do not know the root cause, I do however know that the torment is all too real and that the only way to calm the storm inside of us is to practice those things that bring us peace.

“Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it”

IBN KHALDOUN AL MUQADDIMA (1332-1406)

SCHOLAR AND STATESMAN

The treasure is peace and the only way to attain it is to fight through the negative thoughts and actively practice an activity. We must put the phone down. We must step away from the TV. We must stop reading or watching and praying that somehow through osmosis our quality of life will get better. Admire those who lead a life like the one you want to live but after liking all of their pics on social media or soaking in all the glitz and glam on their show, water your own garden. Help yourself bloom.

Darkness wants you to stay exactly where you are- the more self-pity the better. It wants you to believe that your reality is limited to the things you can see and it is really good at blurring your vision. But light? Light wants you to get up and run, light wants you to write, to create, to work-out, to cook your favorite meal, to connect with a friend or genuinely enjoy your spouse or family. Light wants you to know that just like darkness, the more you practice it, the more you’ll feel it.

Only you know what brings you peace, do it. And if by chance you don’t, try something new, try as many things as you need to until you find your go-to activity. The comforting thing about this treasure is that it is not scarce. It’s there for you whenever you want it. The question is are you ready to put your knowledge into practice?

  1. This is awesome! Just exactly what I’ve been working on for the past few months. I discovered my go-to activity is reading, which I hated with a passion (especially when associated with school) but in the mist of working on certain areas of my life, I learned it keeps me calm. It brings me peace.
I will continuously be a a work in progress, but I am enjoying the journey!
